Will your Don work on its own or by association with the earlier one?

How similar is it to the earlier film?
Similar in that it’s a remake, similar in the dilemma of the characters but different in how the screenplay unfolds.

Nervous?
Right now, tired, but I am anxious and looking forward to the release.

Lakshya didn’t work despite its cast, story etc. Does that make you wonder about Don?
That was a different film. Currently, all my energies are focused on this one.

What do you go by—gut feeling that this is a film to make or what?
Yes, a feeling that you’ll tell the story correctly. Then you show it to people and see their responses and get a sense of it.

How have the girls fared in Don?
Priyanka has the meaty role. She rehearsed a lot and her professionalism shows.

And Kareena?
Kareena’s is a responsible act. It wasn’t to be taken lightly and she got the anguish in her expression along with the dance.

Why only two songs from the original?
There were many reasons for me to make the film—khaike paan banaraswala being one, the background score being another, the styling, etc. The two songs inspired me and it would’ve been unfair not to retain them.

What kind of an experience was it doing this film?
Wonderful. I was revisiting my childhood.

How do you think the audience will react?
Once you see the film, you’ll realise we are not out to say "see I’ve made a better film". You’ll realise it has been made by fans of the original. There were things in the original that made me want to remake it. That’s what I’ve done.
