And we are facing a drought this year, though it’s not officially confirmed. We hear statements like ‘man is nothing in front of the wrath of nature’, but before we indulge ourselver further, we must ask if we have done our bit to save the day.

One question we need to ask ourselves is, ‘am I eating local fruits, vegetables, grains’? It’s as basic as asking, ‘am I switching off the lights when not in use’?, but not well advocated like save electricity/ water campaigns. You can do your bit by patronising local produce that not only replenishes the soil, but also doesn’t put a strain on resources like water, and electricity. Most importantly, you eat food that is fresher and tastier. It also helps you lose weight.

Take masala oats. It’s an attempt to sell you food that is not local by providing you a cultural link—masala. One that you will identity with and therefore buy into the gimmick. This habit of ours of looking at boxes to provide health has led to the UN declaring a few crops NUS—Neglected and Under-utilised Species. Because once they were recognised for their therapeutic properties but are now seriously under threat. Amla, tamarind, jackfruit, kokum are just some of the NUS out of India. So are jowar, bajra and other millets. Not surprisingly, these drink up less water; you could even call them drought-resistant. The question is, are you ready to change the concept of well-being to improvement of not just your health but also that of the Earth? Are you willing to go beyond the packaged cereals and multigrain breads? Or will you force change to change you?
