Empty stomachs make for emptier classrooms: a simple equation that our government just doesn't seem to get. This in spite of the Supreme Court's landmark order last November, ruling that all states introduce cooked mid-day meals in primary schools in at least half their districts by February this year. The deadline over, the order unimplemented in most states, the past week saw school children across the country taking to the streets, demanding food as their right.

A cry that went largely unregistered by headlines caught up with recording the communal frenzy gripping the country. Yet, not so long ago, public disgust at India's crisis of hunger amidst plenty was at its peak. And thousands of children who symbolically clutched empty plates in their hands in rallies across nine states in the country past week reminded us that hunger still stalks them.
