Price: Depends on how reckless you’re feeling

There are nooks in the fanciest hotels that even non-millionaires can dare to enter, and the Oberoi deli used to be one of them, especially an hour before closing, when the prices of cakes, breads, quiches and other perishables were slashed by 30 per cent. No longer. The little room off the lobby has given way to 4,000 square feet of Bottochino marble in the basement, with soft lighting and elegant chairs and tables. Gleaming counters and super-attentive staff dispense a vast selection of cakes and pastries, imported meats and cheeses, teas and coffees, chocolates and wines. It’s a deli to die for—for prices that will kill you faster than the fat in the cheese and the salami. If you’re feeling extravagant, pick up a smidgen of gorgonzola cheese (Rs 300/100 gm), some slices of spianata calabrese salami (Rs 275/100 gm) or San Daniel ham (Rs 450/100 gm), and a loaf of freshly baked ciabatta. Wash it all down at home with chilled beer, or a bottle of wine. And since there is nothing quite as satisfying as an impromptu meal like this, pray as you drink for an affordable deli in saddi dilli, where you can drop in without negotiating five layers of security....
