Screen Time For Politicos

A biopic on former Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy was supposed to be in the works, starring Kannada actor Arjun Sarja in the lead role. Of course, the Janata Dal (Secular) leader is no stranger to the film world, having been a producer before he took to politics full-time. Even later, about a decade ago, he did a guest role in a film. But there he’s got company. At least three other Karnataka CMs have faced the clapper-board so far. The list looks like it’s only getting longer. The buzz now is that CM Siddaramaiah is set for a cameo appearance in a children’s film.

Mystery Leaks

Tamil Nadu’s search for a full-fledged police chief was plagued by scandal and one-upmanship. The race among five DGPs got curiouser with a leaked income tax letter to the chief secretary, seeking a probe into alleged kickbacks by ghutka dealers to the state health minister and two top cops. Though the local press has been following the ‘kickbacks’ story for a while, the leak’s timing early this week raised some eyebrows. Was it a ploy to discredit some officers, so Delhi’s nominee could head the police force and be in place during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls (it’s a two-year term)? The surprise meeting of the senior-most DGP and Sashastra Seema Bal chief, Archana Ramasundaram, with CM Palaniswami in Delhi added to the grist.

Waiting For Bypoll

Manohar Parrikar doesn’t seem to have taken many policy decisions in his fourth stint as Goa CM. Apparently, he is waiting for the bypoll, which he has to win within six months of taking over—i.e., by September. The Election Commission’s hands, though, are visibly full; presidential and vice-presidential polls are imminent. A host of issues are awaiting Parrikar’s attention. For instance, there are whispers that health minister Vishwajit Rane, who had shifted loyalty from the Congress to the BJP just ahead of assembly polls in March, is unacceptable to most BJP workers in his constituency.

Overheard When Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee got an UN award for the Kanyashree scheme, a state BJP leader asked, “Will she next claim that she started the Pradhan Mantri schemes too?”
