BJP’s Bihar Caste Gambit

After its rout in the assembly polls in Bihar last year, the BJP has made another bid to win over the Yadavs, the staunchest supporters of RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav. It has appointed Nityanand Rai as the new president of the state unit. The Ujiyarpur MP is no heavyweight but the BJP apparently wants to project him as a young Yadav leader to counter the rise of Laloo’s son Tejashwi. The BJP had appointed two upper caste leaders—Mangal Pandey and C.P. Thakur—as state presidents in the past decade but in a state where Yadavs account for about 12 per cent votes, it expects Rai to wean a section of Yadav voters away from Laloo and Sons.

Bullet Train On Slow Tracks

Utter confusion prevails in the railway ministry over the implementation of the high-speed train project, something that has been close to prime minister Narendra Modi’s heart. Earlier, a High Speed Rail Corporation (HSRC) was formed as a subsidiary of the mini-Ratna PSU, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), to get the first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on track. Not happy with the pace of work, railway minister Suresh Prabhu then formed a new firm—National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRC)—in February, 2016, to implement the 1,00,000 crore project. Ten months later, a search committee is still looking for a MD for the company. It will happen soon, say railway officials, with little conviction.

J&K Govt Awaits Report About Dead Crows

The J&K government has ordered an investigation after the recovery of 14 dead crows from the lawns of chief minister Mehbooba Mufti’s residence in Jammu. The wildlife department examined the crows last week and sent some of them to Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology and North Region Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Jalandhar, to find out how the crows died. The wildlife department has not received the report so far. Meanwhile, all kinds of spooky theories are floating around about bad omens and how the chief minister should not ignore the portent.

Overheard The next target of the Narendra Modi government is Benami property holders across the country. They may be asked to come clean or be prepared to go to jail.
