The caste factor is again playing bugaboo with that peerless representative of monolithic Hinduism, the BJP. The latest disruptive influence is the just-relieved Union health minister, C.P. Thakur, in his new rebellious avatar. Now back home in Patna, Thakur is hell-bent on proving to his political masters that he’s no pushover. He has projected his ouster from the Union cabinet as a blot on the Bhumihar caste to which he belongs. And it’s not just the ineffectual sulk of a defeated man. Thakur has the solid backing of his caste members, irrespective of their political loyalties. Barring the BJP MLAs, all other Bhumihar legislators have come out openly in his support.

But it’s not as if the Bihar unit of the BJP is a picture of perfect unity. Disgruntled elements accuse state president Nand Kishore Yadav of having played a dubious role in Thakur’s ouster. Many believe that the BJP’s central leadership succumbed to the gutkha lobby’s pressure.
