Chewing On Chick-Lit
Taslima Nasreen has once again run into a controversy. This time, though, it’s not in native Bangladesh, but in her favoured haven Calcutta. High court judge Jayanta Kumar Biswas imposed a 15-day restriction on the publication, printing and sale of her controversial book Dwikhandita: Amar Meyebela, Part III
, last week. This was in response to a petition filed by a local writer, Syed Hasmat Jalal, against Taslima for damaging his image. Categorically denying sexual relations with her, something that finds mention in the book, Jalal admits to a mere acquaintance with her. He has also refused to buy the book’s contention that Hindu intellectuals ganged up against their Muslim counterparts in West Bengal to suppress their voice. Jalal has also accused Taslima of giving factually incorrect information about him. This row comes close on the heels of the ban imposed on her earlier work Ka in Bangladesh.
