What’s Voices Within about?

It’s about the spirit of Carnatic music. About seven musicians who have shaped and defined our music. They are the voices within.

Who are the seven musicians featured?

I cannot divulge now. Wait till the launch in Delhi on January 12.

Three musicians you would have loved to include but could not.

Not three, we would have loved to feature many more. But these seven are the path-breakers.

Why undertake an endeavour like this?

It’s a tribute. Also our definition of why we are here and why this ancient form of music is our passion.

Can this claim to be the first coffee-table book on Carnatic music?

Of course it is.

Does the concert platform’s thrust on compositions curb overall musical creativity?

Singing compositions do require a lot of creativity, that’s why they are evergreen.

Carnatic still seems to nurture an audience only among Tamils within India and abroad, Tam-Brahms especially. Why?

Not true. We perform in France, Germany and several other places within India. Thelanguage of Carnatic music is universal.

Will Voices Within help attract newer audiences to the genre?

It glorifies this art, will make the art lover proud. It will sure hold existing audiences tighter and bring in new ones.

Carnatic music is today learnt over the internet and through recordings. Is the guru becoming redundant?

Every technological innovation has always lent itself to art. But the guru is indispensable.

Can we expect more books from you and T.M. Krishna?

Sure.
