  • India’s first outbreak of bird flu confirmed on February 19, with the death of 40,000 birds in Navapur in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district
  • Since then, nearly 3 lakh birds have been culled in Maharashtra and Gujarat in the effort to contain bird flu, and almost 6 lakh eggs destroyed
  • India’s poultry industry is worth Rs 35,000 crore per year
  • India is the world’s fifth largest producer of eggs and ninth largest producer of broiler poultry
  • So far, India’s poultry industry has suffered losses of over Rs 1,100 crore, with sharp drop in poultry sales
  • Transporters carrying poultry and eggs have reported Rs 200 crore losses
  • The armed forces, railways, Indian Airlines and Parliament House canteen besides most hotels and restaurants have taken chicken and eggs off their menu
  • Seven countries, including Japan, have banned poultry imports from India
