The cartoon controversy has led to NCERT recalling all the old books from the distributors, an estimated one lakh, and reprinting them before the academic session starts in a month.

Here are tips for a first-time writer by a veteran publisher. In most cases, 80 per cent of the first draft is no good and will end up in the bin. So be prepared to see many of your laboured lines vanish. Few writers can work in spurts. When the muse is with you, write. When it is not, still write. Do have a daily word-limit, but even on bad days write at least five lines. And unless you are V.S. Naipaul, it helps to let your editor be in on your progress.
