At a seminar in Varanasi, when noted Hindi writer Namwar Singh declared that Sumitra NandanPant's poetry was rubbish, he was probably hoping to spark off some lively literary debate. But what followed was a PIL, charging him with offending admirers ofPant's poetry. Critics and reviewers beware! The next time they slam a writer's work they might have to defend their opinions in court.

The stream of books to mark the 60th Independence Day include two rival collections of great Indian speeches, from Random House and Penguin. All the great orators of thepast--from Vivekananda, Gandhi and Tagore to Nehru and Iqbal--wrote their own speeches, in their eloquent individual styles. But do speeches by later leaders really deserve to be included? Most of them are the work of anonymous speechwriters.
