Another trend silently making its presence felt are book clubs. Delhi bookshops claim there are hundreds such operating from drawing rooms. Curiously, they're all "ladies only". While publishers are still clueless about their existence, bookshops are doing brisk business thanks to them. Since everyone has to read the same book, members usually pre-order copies. Requests range from predictables—The Last Mughal and Inheritance of Loss—to bygones like Anger of Aubergines by Bulbul Sharma, strangely a favourite with most clubs.

Unhappy Reminder
Poor Rajmohan Gandhi. His publisher, Penguin director Avik Sarkar, ruined his launch by trumpeting the Saraladevi episode which the author is so anxious to bury. Sarkar embarrassed him further by reminding chief guest Sonia Gandhi that Rajmohan had contested an election against Rajiv. Sonia was amused, but not Rajmohan, who'd lost against Rajiv.
