Watching Bastushaap was like reading a delectable short story under warm blankets on a cold winter’s evening. All those quirky characters growing on you to the point that you don’t want to part company: A lovable feng shui and vaastu expert (played by Ganguly himself), an eccentric hotel manager who walks with a limp (Abir), his neurotic wife (Raima) and her unstable sister-in-law (Churni). The picturesque setting in misty Darjeeling. Those tantalising twists in the tale. And that ever-present sense of suspense. The occupants of a house in the hills seem to be under a curse. A family friend from Calcutta decides to send a vaastu and feng shui expert and a friend (Parambrata) to help them exorcise it. The plot thickens when a clandestine love affair unfolds. However, the fascinating build-up in the first-half is not satisfactorily resolved later, with some loose ends cursorily tied up. Those violence-filled visions in the shooting scene, for instance, are justified later but don’t have a strong impact. There is also a rather yawn-inducing conversation about an NGO. But other than such minor glitches, it is an engaging film. Watch out especially for Raima as the loving but lonely wife, Churni as the lost and lonely widow and Kaushik as the fumbling feng shui expert. What adds to that dreamy ambience is the retro costume design by Shubha Mitra.
