Happy New Year! And yet... what do we mean by that? Is 2006 truly gone? Our intuitive conception of time is of something that tick-tocks away, relentlessly forward-marching into the future. There is no ambiguity in it, no messing around with it. But in 1905 Einstein showed that the rate at which time passes depends on your speed relative to others. Thus, time became more relative, more personal. By moving rapidly relative to others, you can slow down your personal clock�the rate at which your Rolex ticks, the rate at which your heart beats, and yes, even the rate at which you age. In our everyday lives we never notice this, but the closer we get to the speed of light, the more pronounced the effect is. For example, suppose there are two twins, say Rahel and Estha. Sedentary Estha stays at home while Rahel, a speed demon, takes off in her spaceship at 99.999996 per cent of the speed of light, on what she thinks will be a little weekend excursion in space. But because time passes slower for her, when Rahel returns to earth she is horrified to...
