The Opposition—the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the CPI(M)—don’t disagree with the idea per se. But in a memorandum submitted to the prime minister, the AGP alleged: "The Congress is silent on evicting the suspected Bangladeshi nationals from the Kaziranga National Park, but it has started evicting the "local" people from the reserved forest lands."

Over 12,600 families were evicted from 11,544 ha of forest land in and around Guwahati city in the early phase of the operation. The government was acting upon a directive from the Supreme Court and the Union ministry of environment and forests to clear the forests of encroachers by September 30 this year.

Aware of the controversy, chief minister Tarun Gogoi reviewed the eviction drive on June 18. Grievance cells are now to be set up to ensure there are no illegal evictions.
