The Valley of Death or the Hukawng region in Myanmar could well be the wilderness from where the separatist United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is sourcing its deadly stock of TNT and PETN explosives. Their impact was heard loud and clear between December 13-14 when the outfit conducted nearly 10 bomb and grenade raids in Assam, including four in the capital Guwahati, killing at least three people and wounding more than 50. The bombings have come at a time when celebrated Assamese novelist and Jnanpith awardee Indira Goswami is on a renewed mission to broker peace between the rebels and New Delhi. The attacks came after ULFA rejected an unconditional invitation from the PMO last week to talk peace.
