The MP government’s keenness to ensure that the 400-MW Maheshwar hydel project goes on stream as early as possible is easily explained. It was anger over elusive power and non-existent roads that made Uma Bharati chief minister in the first place. The coming Lok Sabha polls have now imparted a sense of urgency on her. After commissioning the 250-MW Indira Sagar hydel project last month, she has decided to extend a Rs 400-crore guarantee to the private promoters of the Rs 2,100-crore Maheshwar project that has been hanging fire for over a decade because of environmentalist concerns. The project should start generating power early next year.
