All-Round Genius
  • Vinoo Mankad was the first Indian to take a five-for and score a century in the same Test. Subsequently, the feat has been achieved by only one other Indian - Pony Umrigar scored an unbeaten 172 and took 5 for 107 against West Indies at Port-of-Spain in l961-62.

  • One of India's best allrounders, Mankad achieved the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in just 23 Tests, then a world record. Ian Botham later reached the landmark in 21 Tests but no other allrounder has bettered Mankad's mark since. Among modem-day cricketers, Kapil Dev achieved the feat in '25 Tests, Shaun Pollock in 26, Richard Hadlee in 28, Imran Khan in 30 and Chris Cairns in 33.

  • Mankad also featured in a record 413-run partnership for the first wicket with Pankaj Roy against New Zealand in Madras in 1955-56. It still stands as the only opening partnership of over 400 runs in Tests. Mankad went on to make 231, which was the highest Test score by an Indian till Sunil Gavaskar's 236 not out against West Indies in 1983-84.
