For example, Vijaya Ramachandran, daughter of former president R. Venkataraman, has been working in Kanpur for the last 30 years, running an educational programme for children of Bilaspuri and other construction and brick kiln workers. With 20 centres and a hostel for nine children in the city, she finds the problem intractable. Her appeal to the education department officials to initiate centres at the remaining 300-odd brick kilns and construction sites in and around Kanpur simply falls on deaf ears. The author deserves to be complimented for presenting such a complicated problem in a lucid way. Prashant Panjiar’s accompanying photographs do their own telling.
