The Kitten Has Landed

She is the latest princess to waltz down to tinsel town. Bollywood is buzzing these days with the upcoming baptism of Soha Ali Khan, Tiger Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore’s daughter, into its ranks. We heard she’s debuting in an Amol Palekar flick, but the girl herself is not confirming anything. Is she eyeing any particular banner or director? No, even-first timers will do. Is she comfortable with Bollywood’s staple dance numbers? If Saif, with his “two left feet” can dance, Soha says, she’s got hope. But going by the way she made heads turn at designer Manav Gangwani’s show recently, brother Saif and sis-in-law Amrita just couldn’t hide the glint in their eyes. Attagirl, Soha.

Next Door Femme

No statutory warnings for impressionable young girls here. Bollywood’s getting bolder with Srinivas Bhashyam’s Paisa Vasool: for the first time a mainstream comedy starring Manisha Koirala and Sushmita Sen will see young, middle-class, socially midtown women smoking and drinking. Says Bhashyam: “Indian films have never showed their lead women like this. That’s because we are a nation of hypocrites.” Here’s hoping the wise uncle with the scissors doesn’t mind the twist in the plot!

This one’s straight from the horse’s mouth. At a time when Lara Dutta’s still struggling for a foothold in Bollywood, she’s come out with this bombshell. Dutta recently revealed that she was the “original” choice for the two sequels to the Matrix series. But why did the Reloaded and Revolution happen without her? “Because I didn’t enjoy the movie since Hollywood has copied the Gita.” Beat that.

In My Flying Machine... was perhaps on her lips when Audrey Mayben, 27, piloted her microlight aircraft from Bangalore to Nagpur (about 1,400 km) at the recent air race. The only woman pilot-in-command and flying solo at the race, Mayben’s set her goal high: the World Gliding Championships and the World Aerobics meet. “I am going to give it a try even if I have to try for the next ten years.” Amen to bird power!

  • She takes after her mother in so many ways: the shape of her  face, that smile, the way her hair  tumbles back. He, as you all can see, is an image of his dad (has he inherited that two-generation-old dimple?) Saif and Amrita Singh’s children Sara and Ibrahim Ali Khan are holidaying in England. This casual, happy chat over some Earl Grey does confirm what they say—the siblings are inseparable.
  • It’s bad enough to earn millions while having a talent for nothing except indecently hogging attention; it’s worse to lay claim to a venerable tradition in service to one’s base business instinct. But what do you expect from Kim Kardashian, who had the audacity to name her upcoming shapewear line (to be worn inside) ‘Kimono’. While you condemn her for the usual  self-centredness (as millions did), laud her for knowing something  about a place as further afield as Japan. The  name, thankfully, stands withdrawn.
  • Though the Trinamool cut a sorry figure, then took its reverses badly, our favourite MPs from Bengal—close pals  and actresses Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan, were untouched by the sour petulance. Fresh from Nusrat’s wedding in Turkey, and so absent when other MPs took their oaths in Parliament, the duo did the needful later, not forgetting to use ‘Jai Bangla’. Didi is happy; can’t say we aren’t, too!
  • Blink, and you’ll travel back to the glory days of disco, with Cardi B’s multi-coloured jumpsuit transporting you effortlessly. But, disaster struck at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, when this splendid  garment gave way along its nether seams, hurrying poor Cardi  offstage.  The singer arrived minutes later in a bathrobe, the picture of unflappability. “We gonna keep it sexy,”  she crooned. That is style.
