Dreams Girl

She turned down Kamalahaasan but accepted Boney Kapoor. What's up with Hema Malini's daughter Esha Deol? Bollywood is agog with this career twist. Kamal approached Hema for Esha's hand - for his film of course. It remained on paper though as the lady dithered, fearing hubby Dharmendra's wrath. But Vinay Shukla (who directed Godmother) and Kapoor won over the family and got this star kid to sign on the dotted line. Jaya Bachchan plays Esha's mother and Aftab Shivdasani and Sanjay Kapoor make up for the love interest. Yes, the dynasty rules. Yet again.

Nose for News

She's always been the first off the block. Madhu Trehan launched India Today in '75 just as the magazine boom was set to take off. Newstrack, her next brainchild, was the first to make TV news hard, incisive and interesting in this country way back in '88. Now she has launched wahindia.com, a news and current affairs site on the Net. Started in August this year, the portal covers everything the papers and TV shy away from and has topped PC World India's Best of the Web awards list. Wahmadhu!

Mindspeak

nonagenarian painter, sculptor and teacher B.C. Sanyal has just released the second volume of his memoirs, The Vertical Woman. Working on a vertical, lifesize stone years ago, Sanyal found his mind wandering from the discipline of his hammer and chisel. "It was like a flashback," says Sanyal. "My boyhood, my years as a student and an artist came over me in snatches. That's how I started to pen it." The result? A testimony of a life, art movements and an era which is "quite fat", jokes Sanyal with his signature humour.

The Power of Ten

diets are, well, dime a dozen these days. Actress Rekha has come up with a novel method of keeping mid-life flab at bay. So the lady has 10 rasgullas for all her three meals. Great, except that her unique diet had the entire unit of Zubeida in Jaipur scurrying around in the hunt for this Bengali delicacy. The monotony of this regimen wasn't broken even once and the results have meant a svelte Madame Re. Now if only she were to drop her kilos of pancake, jewellery and kanjeevarams, it would make her feel a lot lighter and prettier.

French Leave

affable Indophile Patrick French is currently off on a two-week cruise with his wife. His last book Liberty or Death created quite a sensation - having recast Gandhi and Jinnah in a controversial light. Now French's busy writing a book on Tibet and was last spotted in Dharamshala interviewing the Dalai Lama. Courtesy the French touch, what avatar will he emerge in, one wonders.

Welcome, Sir John

michael Jackson is a tough act to follow but Mumbai-ites certainly know just how to keep the adrenaline pumped up. As part of their millennium celebrations, none other than Sir Elton John may be winging his way to the metropolis next month. Of course, there exists the possibility of that proverbial slip between the cup and the lip. Sir John could well become Jaikishan. So, watch this space.

  • Couldn’t she have had a better hairstyle than one which makes her hair stand up in ungainly tufts, like that of a bird soaked to its skin in the Mumbai monsoon? Couldn’t he have worn a jacket without those offensive stripes, often an indicator of a perfect marriage of bad taste with sudden money? But Rahika is soaring after the success of Andhadhun; Ali Fazal, too, is gearing up for his role in a Hollywood production of Death on the Nile, the Poirot mystery. They smiled reassuringly at the ‘IIFA Rocks’ event; they had a lot of fun.
  • Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla started designing trousseaus fit for a princess for the catwalk when designers weren’t famous in their own right. Thirty-three years on, they are well-known now, and celebrated with a show in Mumbai, They dressed up the reliably gorgeous Deepika in this intricately woven, ivory-embellished lehenga. At the end of the walk, she broke into a jig. For joy, certainly. But, given an inch, Bollywood will out!
  • With every conceivable sporting activity speedily shuffled up into a corporatised league for maximum milking, it’s unsurprising that the annual boat race on the Punnamada lake inaugurated the Champions Boat League. Sachin, outrigged by Kathakali dancers, spoke of Kerala’s resilience in the face of floods and its passion for cricket.
  • For all his Bhangra moves, Justin Trudeau had a diplomatically disastrous tour of India, but the boyishly handsome Canadian premier  remains a darling of the masses, especially swooning womenfolk. It was no surprise then that at an informal gaggle of world leaders at the G7 summit, Melania turned to  him for a peck, as the weight of the world kept the scowl fixed on Donald’s face. As a Twitter wag put it: “Find someone who looks at you like  Melania looks at Trudeau.”
