The Riviera Sparkles

With wielders of poison-tipped pens poised to stab you for that one fashion faux pas, only the great glamorous pull it off on the Cannes red carpet with composed eclat. That rarefied list must now include Aishwarya Rai, who, in her 17th year on the carpet, carries this peacock-butterfly inspired (rather gaudy, if you ask me) gown as if born in it.

The rookie, Kangana, tries harder in this metallic, beaded jumpsuit, redolent partly of Saturday Night Live and partly of Jane Fonda’s Barbarella.

Elsewhere, the cast of Manto (Nandita Das, Nawazuddin, Rasika Dugal and Tahir Bhasin) line up before the film’s screening.

Finally, a grand show by grandes dames: head of the festival jury Cate Blanchett leads actresses and other women in the industry to protest the long absence of women from the merit lists.

She Will Be A Tiger Mom

The shrine of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina hosts pilgrims from all over the world seeking the Almighty’s blessings. Recent visitors included cricketer Shoaib Malik and his wife, Sania Mirza, who is expecting. She said she cherishes her life’s ‘new phase’, and promised not to forsake tennis.

Son Has Made His Name

Thirty years ago, we schoolboys danced for months to Papa Kehte Hain (and the songs these days...). At a commemorative premiere of QSQT, the mustachioed Aamir fiddled around with a guitar. He must have recalled Reena, who was an extra in the song, and who he secretly married. Memories are made of this.

To A Happy Couple

They might keep their wedding a closely guarded affair, but the clearing off for the honeymoon has to be circulated among hoi polloi. As Angad Bedi and Neha Dhupia schlepped off to the US, hand in loverly hand, we scratched our heads, wondering why it is thus. Ah, but then, smaller stars too must display a need for privacy!

This Too Happened

Margot Kidder, known for her role as Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in the Superman films of the ’70s and ’80s and for starring in The Amityville Horror, has died at the age of 69 after an unspecified illness. Tributes poured in from both the showbiz world and the comics fraternity.

  • Though the Russians presented a united front of splendrous symmetry, winning golds in synchronised swimming at the FINA world championships at Gwangju, S. Korea, we only have eyes for the Italians, caught here in the glistening throes of a cascading collapse, arms linked and eyes cocked. Olgas and Tatianas hit the podium; Giulias and Francescas smacked us hard in the solar plexus.
  • She takes after her mother in so many ways: the shape of her  face, that smile, the way her hair  tumbles back. He, as you all can see, is an image of his dad (has he inherited that two-generation-old dimple?) Saif and Amrita Singh’s children Sara and Ibrahim Ali Khan are holidaying in England. This casual, happy chat over some Earl Grey does confirm what they say—the siblings are inseparable.
  • It’s bad enough to earn millions while having a talent for nothing except indecently hogging attention; it’s worse to lay claim to a venerable tradition in service to one’s base business instinct. But what do you expect from Kim Kardashian, who had the audacity to name her upcoming shapewear line (to be worn inside) ‘Kimono’. While you condemn her for the usual  self-centredness (as millions did), laud her for knowing something  about a place as further afield as Japan. The  name, thankfully, stands withdrawn.
  • Though the Trinamool cut a sorry figure, then took its reverses badly, our favourite MPs from Bengal—close pals  and actresses Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan, were untouched by the sour petulance. Fresh from Nusrat’s wedding in Turkey, and so absent when other MPs took their oaths in Parliament, the duo did the needful later, not forgetting to use ‘Jai Bangla’. Didi is happy; can’t say we aren’t, too!
