Ministry of Finance, in a notification released on May 25, said that it has authorised the minting of a commemorative Rs 75 coin to mark the inauguration of new Parliament building.
“The coin of Rs 75 denomination shall be coined at the Mint for issue under the authority of the Central Government on the occasion of Inauguration of New Parliament Building,” the notification said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new Parliament on May 28.
Specifying the dimensions and composition of the coin, the notification said the diameter of the new coin will be 44 milimeter while it will compose of 50 per cent silver, 40 per cent copper, 5 per cent nickel and 5 per cent zinc. The standard weight of the new coin will be 35 grams.
The face of the coin will have the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar with ‘Satyamev Jayate’ in Devnagri script inscribed below. The reverse side of the coin will bear an image of the Parliament complex with Sansad Sankul written in the Devnagri script on the upper periphery.
The inauguration of the new Parliament building will witness several historic events. The new building will replace the old Parliament which was opened in 1927, when the country was still under British rule.
During the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also install a historic sceptre known as Sengol near the Lok Sabha speaker’s chair. The sceptre symbolises transfer of power, according to an old tamil tradition.
Built under the Rs 20,000 crore Central Vista project, the new Parliament building is part of the ambitious plan of Narendra Modi government to redevelop government infrastructure in the national capital.
