Google has become stricter with its inconsistent employees who are not coming to the offices regularly. The tech giant has told its employees that their office badge attendance will become part of the ‘performance reviews’.

Google is pressuring the staff with this trick as it gets stricter in implementing the return-to-office policy, reported the Wall Street Journal.

In a staff-wide email, Google’s Chief People Officer Fiona Cicconi said employees who are willing to work remotely full-time will be considered “by exceptions only”. Google has reversed the Covid pandemic policy that allowed thousands of employees to relocate away from company offices.

“We’ve heard from Googlers that those who spend at least three days a week in the office feel more connected to other Googlers, and that this effect is magnified when teammates work from the same location. Of course, not everyone believes in ‘magical hallway conversations,’ but there’s no question that working together in the same room makes a positive difference,” she said.

In April 2022, Google told its employees would be expected to work from the office at least three days a week. According to the new policy, office attendance will be a key factor during the company’s performance reviews.

The email pointed out that managers will send reminders to staff who are continuously absent from the office.

In February, Google Cloud employees were asked to start sharing desks and attend office on alternate days. Amazon is also pushing employees to return to the office.

Google parent Alphabet announced the largest layoffs in history, sacking more than 6% of its workforce or around 12,000 employees.
