Apple has reportedly told Indian officials that it needs a ‘concrete reason or a legal requirement’ to take down betting apps. As per a report, Apple needs this to fully comply with Centre’s directive to take down betting apps from its App Store.
According to a report in the Economic Times, Apple has not entirely refused to comply with the MeitY’s order but has merely asked for a reason in order to remove betting apps and make them unavailable in India.
Based on the information that Apple has reportedly been asked to look into ways to ensure that the order is implemented, a source told ET, “It (Apple) contended that since these apps are valid and legal in other geographies, it would be difficult for (Apple) to bar them outright in India.”
The reports adds that some betting apps like Betway, BetNetix and Bet Analytix, even though were a part of the list of banned apps, are still available on App Store. However, Google Play Store has already removed them.
As some interim relief/compliance, iPhone-maker Apple has reportedly taken down some of the apps that the MeitY banned in February. It is also “working on the best possible solution” for other apps.
In other news, Apple’s WWDC 2023 preparations have started and as per media reports, some invites to select media have already been rolled out. Apart from IOS17, this WWD may also have a new Macbook Air by Apple.
