New Delhi (India), February 17: India is on the cusp of arriving on the world scene as a global powerhouse. It has undergone a journey of transformation from a nascent economy to the world’s fastest-growing economy and the fifth-largest economy as per the International Monetary Fund.  

What powers India’s growth is, first and foremost, their person.  

Remarkable people who have established themselves in the industries in which they operate and delivered where it may have been seen as impossible. Their work is truly inspiring for an enterprising contemporary generation worldwide. 

Deakin University believes in honouring the leaders and entrepreneurs who have made significant contributions that align with our vision and values. 

Across different fields of research and industry, Deakin has conferred Honorary Doctorates to stalwarts who have created paradigm shifts in their fields and achieved far-reaching community outcomes through their work.

In 2023, Deakin University is proud to confer an Honorary Doctorate upon Subramaniam Ramadorai - a great visionary who has made significant contributions and delivered value through his services to global IT businesses, stakeholders and local communities. 

One of the architects of the transformation of India’s Information Technology industry, Mr Ramadorai, has led the Tata Consultancy Services Group. He built it from a private holding with about $150 million in revenue in 1996 to a public holding of $15 billion in revenue. He was the Chairman of the Bombay Stock Exchange as it competed against the tech-savvy National Stock Exchange.  

Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the Advisory Board at Tata STRIVE. This skill development initiative addresses the pressing national need for skilling youth for employment, entrepreneurship, and community enterprise. He is also the Chairman of Tata Technologies Limited and serves as an Independent Director on the Boards of Piramal Enterprises Limited, Piramal Pharma Limited and DSP Investment Managers.

Mr Ramadorai is a well-recognised global leader and has been felicitated with the Padma Bhushan in India and Commander of the Order of the British Empire by the UK. 

Alongside this, Deakin University has recognised pioneering work in critical fields that have transformed people’s lives. 

In the field of biotechnology and life sciences, Deakin has felicitated Dr Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and Dr Vishwanathan Mohan for their groundbreaking research and entrepreneurship. 

In 2019, Dr Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was awarded a Deakin Honorary Doctorate for her role in biotechnology and her sustained and significant contribution to university and industry connections between India and Australia. 

She believes that – “True leaders are visionaries with a sense of purpose, who persevere and have a passion for change. They know that leadership is not about control but being able to inspire people with values and vision.” 

Dr Vishwanathan Mohan has impacted countless lives in India and worldwide with his extensive contribution to diabetes research. Deakin University acknowledged his achievements with an Honorary Doctorate in 2017.  

In the field of science, Deakin University has recognised the work of Professor Budaraju Srinivasa Murty and Dr Baba Kalyani for the depth of their R&D, innovation and enterprising skills shown in a dynamic industry. 

Professor Budaraju Srinivasa Murty has made significant contributions as a researcher in the field of advanced materials. While leading different branches of the Indian Institute of Technology, he championed extensive research initiatives, patents, and publications in key areas of material sciences. For this, he was awarded a Deakin Honorary Doctorate in 2017.  

In 2014, Dr Baba Kalyani was awarded a Doctor of Science in recognition of his distinguished work for research and development in the field of science and technology and its enterprise diversification making it international. He has also amplified indigenous manufacturing know-how through the ‘Make in India’ campaign.

Prof Iain Martin, President & Vice-Chancellor, Deakin University - Professor Martin commenced as Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University on 1 July 2019.  He grew up in the UK and completed his medical degree, a doctorate, and a Master of Education at the University of Leeds.  Professor Martin’s move from a clinical academic career to wider university leadership roles was driven by his passionate belief in the importance of universities and the transformational power of higher education for individuals and communities.
