It was a kind of rubbing-your-eyes-early-morning moment. Several morning dailies had erstwhile Bond, Pierce Brosnan, holding up a can of Pan Bahar pan masala.

However, Brosnan is far from the first celebrity from overseas to lend his face and that moustache to an Indian brand.

  • In 2003/04 Steve Waugh and Brian Lara joined Sachin Tendulkar in carrying the MRF sticker on their bats, quite a coup for the Chennai-based tyre manufacturer.
  • In 2013, the Australian actor Hugh Jackman, known to the layman as The Wolverine was roped in as a brand ambassador for Micromax.
  • In 2014, former World no. 1 golfer Tiger Woods was signed on in a Rs 200 crore deal by Hero Motor Corp.
  • In November last year, Tata Motors secured the signature of arguably the best footballer in the world, Lionel Messi.
