Contrary to initial reports the 'rapist' dragged out and lynched by a mob at Dimapur on the afternoon of March 5 was not an illegal immigrant or a Bangladeshi. He was an Indian citizen and his father also served in the Indian Army for over two decades. These are some of the other information which has emerged since the mob fury in yet another show of growing violence and intolerance fanned by half-baked information:

  • Syed Farid Khan, third among six brothers, hailed from Karimganj (Assam).
  • He had married a Naga woman four years ago and they have a three-year-old daughter.
  • The complainant, another Naga woman, apparently was close to the family, claims Farid’s brother.
  • Farid’s brother, who had called on him in jail before the lynching, claims that Farid had been asked to give the complainant Rs 2 lakh and when he refused, a false complaint of rape was lodged.
  • While the alleged rape took place in a hotel on February 3, the police is examining the CCTV footage only after the lynching.
  • Dimapur has a population of 1.23 lakh and is 74 km from the capital, Kohima.
  • The arrest and detention of Farid was reported by a local newspaper on its front page a week after the incident.
  • On March 4 people had met district officials and demanded that the accused be handed over to them.
  • On March 5 the mob marched to the prison, broke open the gate, dragged Farid out and lynched him. His body was then tied to a motorcycle and he was dragged to the clock tower 7 km away.
  • While there is an alert in Assam and Nagaland and nobody has been arrested yet.

There are clearly several uncomfortable questions that remain to be answered.
