No Woman, No Drive

Saudi comedian Hisham Fageeh's spoof version of the Bob Marley classic No woman, no cry, protesting the ban on women driving in the Saudi Arabia has gone viral on YouTube.

“I’m an artist and social activist. I don’t really listen to music, but while studying in the US I heard this song by this Jamaican guy that caught my attention. I decided to do my own rendition; with lyrics relevant to my culture but without musical instruments” the video begins, which was posted on YouTube on October 26.

Fageeh is  well known on the Arabic-speaking Web for his funny YouTube videos, which often contain a degree of social commentary. Till the time of posting, the video had run up as as many as over 4.3 million views.

"Say I remember when you used to sit, in the family car, but backseat," the song begins, telling women not to consider getting behind the wheel which was posted on the day set by activists to launch a new campaign to defy the kingdom's ban on women driving.

The song goes on to mock a claim by a Saudi cleric that driving would hurt women's ovaries and bring "clinical disorder" upon their children.

"In this bright future, you can't forget your past, so put your car key away," the song continues.

No woman, no drive
No woman, no drive
No woman, no drive
Say say say
I remember When you used to sit
In the family car, but backseat
Ova-Ovaries are safe and well
So you can make
lots and lots of babies
Good friends we had
And good friends we lost
On the highway
In this bright future
You can't forget your past
So put your car key away

No woman, no drive
No woman, no drive
Hey sister, don't touch that wheel
No woman, no drive
I remember When you used to sit
In the family car, but backseat
Of course the driver can take you everywhere
Because the queens don't drive
But you can cook for me my dinner
Of which I'd share with you
your feet is your only carriage
But only inside the house
and when I say it I mean it
everything's gonna be alright
everything's gonna be alright
everything's gonna be alright
everything's gonna be alright
No woman, no drive
No woman, no drive
No woman, no drive
Hey, little sister, dont touch that wheel
No woman, no drive
