They had to do it, and they did it in style. The famed batting line up finally came good. The score-card has never read this good for India before:

Sehwag 114 in 87 balls - 17x4s, 3X6s
Ganguly 89 in 114 balls - 6x4s, 2x6s
Yuvraj 83 in 46 balls - 4x4s, 7x6s
Sachin 57 in 27 balls - 2x4s, 4x6s
Dhoni 29 in 25 balls - 2x4s, 1x6
Dravid 7 in 2 balls - 0x4s, 1x6
Utthappa 3 in 4 balls

And actually, it's never read this good in a World Cup Match before. This becomes the highest ever team total in a World Cup Match and the fifth time ever that a team managed to cross 400:

443-9 (50 overs) Sri Lanka Netherlands at Amstelveen in 2006
438-9 (49.5 overs) South Africa v Australia at Johannesburg in 2005-06
434-4 (50 overs) Australia v South Africa at Johannesburg in 2005-06
418-5 (50 overs) South Africa v Zimbabwe at Potchefstroom in 2007
413-5 (50 Overs) India v Bermuda at Port of Spain, March 19, 2007.

This is not all. The 18 sixes by India in this match now equals the existing record of 18 sixes in an innings recorded by South Africa as recently as the World Cup game last week against Netherlands:

India 18x6s against Barmuda at Port of Spain, Trinidad on March 19, 2007
South Africa 18x6s against Netherlands at Warner Park at Basseterre on March 16, 2007
New Zealand 16x6s against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2005
Austrlaia 16x6s against New Zealand at Hamilton in 2007

The match also highlighted the classically traditional ODI approach to accelerating in the last overs with wickets to spare: as many as 136 runs came off the last 10 overs, of which the last five overs yielded 84 runs and the last three overs yielded as much as 55 runs. The first 24 balls faced by Yuvraj yielded only 22 runs, with no boundaries, after which of course came a flurry: as many as 4x4a and 7x6s. All of this should help the Net Run Rate a lot — here's to hoping that the bowlers do as well as the batsmen did. Time to stand up and be counted.
