Here are eight things we learnt about Sushma Swaraj:

  1. Sushma Swaraj's husband Swaraj Kaushal is India's youngest governor ever. A senior criminal lawyer practicing in the Supreme Court, Kaushal was made the Governor of Mizoram in 1990 at the age of 37 as a reward for his contribution to the Mizo peace accord, according to The Economic Times.

  2. Kaushal, who unlike Sushma comes from a socialist background, came into the limelight during the Emergency when he defended George Fernandes in the Baroda dynamite case. Kaushal is said to be close to the businessman-politician Sudanshu Mittal, better known in the BJP as the "tentwallah" who was close to the late Pramod Mahajan, says ET.

  3. Sushma Swaraj's daughter Bansuri Swaraj, a law graduate from Oxford University, was part of Lalit Modi's 10-member defence team between 2012 and 2014, alongside then Supreme Court senior advocate, U.U. Lalit, who is now a judge on the apex court.

  4. Sushma Swaraj's husband Swaraj Kaushal’s brother, Pradeep Kaushal, works as a special correspondent for The Indian Express’ in Delhi. It was Pradeep Kaushal's son Jyotirmay's admission for a law course at Sussex University in 2013 that figures in Sushma Swaraj’s tweets, a fact acknowledged by Express on its pages.

  5. The emails of Sushma Swaraj's correspondence with British MP Keith Vaz may have emerged during hacking by a London-based Israeli company engaged especially for his hacking skills, according to The Times of India.

  6. According to rediff.com, a source in the government believes that the documents, which were used by TV news channels to nail the external affairs minister, were leaked by an RTI activist who was once close to lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani and former BCCI chief, N Srinivasan.

  7. In 2011, Sushma disowned the Reddy brothers of Bellary when they came under the Karnataka Lok Ayukta for their illegal mining activity. Swaraj survived the controversy, but according to the Business Standard, blamed Arun Jaitley for having been instrumental for getting the Reddy brothers into the BJP cabinet in the state.

  8. Sushma Swaraj has joined Shashi Tharoor, Salman Khurshid and Preneet Kaur as the fourth consecutive external affairs ministers to be involved in controversies, according to Hindustan Times. Tharoor was snagged by Lalit Modi in IPL, Khurshid in alleged misappropriation of funds for his family-owned trust, and Kaur for being an alleged holder of an undisclosed foreign bank account.
