#Phailin: Correction! Confirmed casualties info so far 7 (not 11 as I said easier). Roads being cleared of trees now. Airport still not open.

 

As the NDRF chief clarified, of these 5 deaths were due a building collapse and two because of trees fallin before the cyclone.

While the DoT directions seem great in theory, it would be fascinating to see the result of these orders on the ground.

The main challenege for relief operations is going to be absence of electricity and people not even being able to charge their phones.

While electricity is turned off for safety reasons, the sheer scale of inundation, evacuation and disruption is such that it would easily be days before any kind of normalcy is restored.

The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has directed all Access Service Providers, National Long Distance (NLD) Service Providers VSAT Service Providers to take steps for immediate maintenance and restoration of telecommunication facilities in Phailin-affected areas of Odisha and AP

The service providers have been asked to share available infrastructure in respective service areas of Andhra Pradesh & Odhisa for 15 days unless extended otherwise.

They have also been asked to operationalise immediately call centers in Andhra Pradesh & Odhisa with following helpline numbers:

  • 1948: Odhisa
  • 1949: Andhra Pradesh

DoT also asked these service providers to operationalise a designated helpline number for access from other service areas.

Service providers have been asked to transmit messages or advisories through SMS from different official agencies -- state governments, central government, NDMA, Metrological Department, to all subscribers in Andhra Pradesh & Odhisa
