What’s The Story
‘Forensic’, an adaption of the same-named Malayalam film, is a crime thriller in which young girls are brutally killed on their birthdays. As fresh evidence emerges thanks to modern forensic tools, the suspect shifts and the mystery deepens. When Johnny (Vikrant Massey) and Megha (Radhika Apte) work together to solve the case, they make considerable progress, but at the expense of their personal and professional lives, which are turned upside down. Will the two be able to keep their emotions aside and solve the case? Will the two get involved so personally that the case gets hampered? Will the killer finally get caught? Well, you’ll have to watch ‘Forensic’ to find out.

What’s Good
The Writing Keeps You Hooked Till The End
The best part about ‘Forensic’ is its writing by Adhir Bhat, Vishal Kapoor, and Ajit Jagtap. Even though it's adapted from the original Malayalam story by Akhil Paul and Anas Khan, the Hindi version tries to bring in a lot more elements to the plot. The writing stays true to the original but manages to bring in a few more twists and turns in the tale, which keeps you hooked till the very end.
Director Vishal Furia brings in his experience of directing thrillers in the past to good use with ‘Forensic’. He manages to amp up the mystery aspect of the screenplay with some taut direction keeping the viewer guessing at every step of the way. Every ten mins you’ll feel someone else is the actual murderer and it’s only in the climax that you get to know who actually has done the killings.

Anshul Chobey’s cinematography brings the perfect feel to the story. Not only has the setting of the story in the hilly areas of Mussoorie helped in bringing in the thrill factor to the plot but the brilliant camera work by Chobey makes a chill run down your spine with every new twist.
What’s Bad
Vikrant Massey And Radhika Apte Are Surprisingly Unimpressive
Surprisingly the acting was the weak point in ‘Forensic’. It should have been a cakewalk for two talented actors like Vikrant Massey and Radhika Apte to have such a high-on-content script. But trying to do something different, the two have managed to dampen the mood of the film. Massey seems to be in a hyper-active mode. He is actually seen moonwalking at a crime scene. Also, his attempt at a strange version of the nursery rhyme ‘Johnny Johnny’ doesn’t come out that well. Apte, on the other hand, is just too loud in her cop act. She hasn’t been able to bring in the conviction needed to play the gritty tough cop.
The music sets the tone in such crime thrillers and murder mysteries. Sadly, Adrija Gupta’s music doesn’t do that at all. In the middle of a serious investigation going on the background score goes on to play a song by Mika Singh and Nikhita Gandhi called Belagaam, which sounds more like an item song. Pathetic! In the entire soundtrack, there is a soft romantic track called Alvida which is just about decent.
Verdict
There are crime thrillers where you’re aware of who would turn out to be the killer in the end. ‘Forensic’ is not one of those. Till the very end, you’re kept second-guessing your own decisions of who the killer could be, and that’s fantastic for a murder mystery. Even though the performances could have been a bit better, the twists and turns in the storyline compensate fairly enough. It’s indeed a Must Watch. I am going with 3.5 stars.
