In a shocking admission, Union Minister Uma Bharti has claimed that she got rapists tortured and made survivors be witness to the spectacle, during her tenure as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

A report in The Times of India says that Bharti, was addressing a rally in Agra where she referenced the Bulandshahr gang-rape of a woman and her daughter in 2016. “The rapists should be hung upside down and beaten till their skin comes off. Salt and chilly should be rubbed on their wounds, so that they scream for their lives. That is what I had got done when I was Chief Minister (of Madhya Pradesh from 2003 to 2004),” the report quotes her as saying.

Bharti, the Union Minister for Water Resources, is said to have added that when police officers objected to the treatment, she asked them to treat the culprits as danavs (demons). The report adds that she told the officers that rapists do not have “human rights” and that they should be beheaded as was the case with Ravana from the Ramayana.

The TOI says that the former MP CM also admitted that she had allowed a rape-victim to watch her perpetrator being tortured so that she could get some “peace”.
