To compete with Bharatiya Janta Party's (BJP) colossal social media presence, Congress has now roped in Kannada actress Divya Spandana, popularly known as Ramya, to head its social media team.

Ramya replaced Deepender Hooda, under whose charge the Congress gradually enhanced its presence on social media but failed to challenge the BJP's supremacy, reported The Telegraph.

The new job comes at a times when rumours that the former Mandya Lok Sabha MP was planning to follow SM Krishna. She has denied the rumours.

Ramya, who scored political brownie points on social media last year  with her statement "Pakistan is not hell", underwent a lot of criticism. A Karnataka lawyer had even filed a sedition case against her.

As 34-year-old actor's remarks triggered a bitter backlash on social media and BJP and ABVP workers staged protests terming her remarks "anti-national", she stood her ground and ruled out tendering any apology, saying she has not said anything wrong.

Now the Congress hopes to take on its giant-rival BJP with the modest team of 20-30 professionals headed by "someone who is better suited for the job". And she has a tough challenge at hand.

BJP is the pioneer in India to use social media as a political tool, and was the among the first major parties to set up a website. It perfected the art of using social media to win elections, including the recently concluded UP polls and Delhi municipal elections.
