The government will now decide how much food you will get on your platter! To check wastage of food, the ministry of consumer affairs, food and distribution has decided to fix the size of portion of food the hotels  and restaurant serve.
"If a person can eat only two prawns, why should he or she be served six? If a person eats two idlis, why serve four! It’s wastage of food and also money people pay for something that they don’t eat," Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan was quoted saying by the Hindustan Times.
He also said that the Dhabas which serve thalis will not come under the scanner. The rules will be applicable only to standard hotels and restaurants.

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal in Mann Ki Baat's previous episode where he called wastage of food as unjustice to poor, the ministry will now let the restaurants explain what dish sizes they should serve to the customers.
In his Mann Ki Baat address last month, while talking about Swachh Bharat and food wastage, Modi said "Have you ever thought about how much food we waste? Have you ever thought how many poor people can be fed if we don’t thus waste our food? This is not something that needs to be taught. As it is, in our families, mothers always tell their children to take only as much food they can eat."

He also encouraged efforts in food management. "There is always some effort made in this direction, but still the apathy on this issue is a crime against society. It is an injustice to the poor," he added.
