The United Jihad Council, an amalgam of around 12 militant organizations, today distanced from an attack on the house of National Conference (NC) legislator, Showkat Ahmad Ganai. The UJC blamed BJP-PDP government for the attack on the opposition politician.

According to a local news agency, the UJC said the attack was carried out by BJP-PDP government as the NC politician had stated that “Burhan Wani was a freedom fighter and martyr, who laid down his life for Kashmir freedom struggle.”

On July 8 last year, Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander, 21-year-old Burhan Muzaffer Wani was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Kokernag area of South Kashmir. The killing evoked massive protests across Kashmir leading to killing of over 90 protesters and injuries of over 10,000.

“Blaming militants for this attack is an attempt from PDP-BJP government to cover their crimes,” the UJC statement said.

The UJC said the attack on the house of Showkat was an eye-opener for all pro-Indian Kashmiri mainstream politicians.

“Burhan is a movement in himself, who gave new direction to Kashmir freedom struggle. There is no surprise if pro-India Kashmiri politicians have conceded to the fact.”

On January 6 morning suspected militants fired at the residence of the MLC at Chitrigam in Zainapora area of Shopian. The legislator was in Jammu for the ongoing Budget session of the State Legislature. Policemen guarding the house of the legislator had retaliated the fire. No one was injured in the shootout.
