In what could come as a good news for frequent travellers in and out of Delhi, the airfare will soon become cheaper as the Supreme Court of India has asked to resolve the issue over Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) levying 96% higher charges on airlines that resulted in price hike of air tickets.

According to a report by The Times of India, in December 2015, the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) cut the charges by 96%  at Delhi airport for the period April 1, 2014, to March 31, 2019 (second control period). However, the slashed rate is yet to be reflected on ticket fares.

The major reason behind the hike is DIAL continuing to charge tariff that AERA had approved for the first control period between April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2014

Earlier, the Delhi Airport operator moved to the Appellate Tribunal (AERAAT) for not charging the correct tariff but the matter was yet to be  resolved.

On January 24, 2017, Air India had filed a special leave petition (SLP) in SC on DIAL's alleged over-charging in current period.

Hearing on the matter, SC had requested the AERA Tribunal to take up the matter at an early date and dispose of the same by the last week of April, 2017.
