Director General School Education has asked women teachers at the government schools in Punjab to not wear “indecent, provocative and fashionable” clothes like jeans and tops. The order said such clothes have an “effect” on the students.
The Indian Express reported that the “no-jeans rule” in the written order by the office of DGSE does not specify any dress rules for male staff.
The DGSE has written to all district education officers (DEOs) and principals to ensure that the new rules are followed.
The order issued in Punjabi stated, “In government schools, teachers, particulary female teachers, wear bright/glittery clothes on duty. Many female teachers wear jeans and top, and many types of provocative and fashionable clothes on duty... which has an effect on the students,” quoted The Hindustan Times.

Amarbir Singh, Assistant Director (Secondary Education), who issued order, told The Indian Express that “jeans and tops are indecent and not part of Punjabi culture”. “They can wear suits. There has to be a proper dupatta. Even saris are okay but not jeans and tops. Teachers are role models…they have to wear something that keeps the body completely covered,” he said.
Earlier, similar reports had come in from other states too with similar orders being issued in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
