In yet another political first, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation from Guwahati on May 26 to mark the completion of three years of his government in the Centre. The PM’s visit to Assam – seen as the gateway to the Northeast -- will also mark one year of BJP’s government in the state. Sarbananda Sonowal government will complete one year on May 24.

Sources say that it is a well-thought out move, keeping with the BJP’s expansion plans in the Northeast. With BJP winning Manipur after Assam, the next target for the party is Tripura that goes to polls later this year. Party president Amit Shah spent two days in Tripura, interacting with party workers and cadres.

“PM’s visit to Assam and his address to the nation from the state Capital will send the right signal. It talks about party’s seriousness regarding the region and its intent to develop it,” a senior party leader says.

To commemorate one year of BJP government in Assam, the PM will also inaugurate the Dhola-Sadiya bridge on river Brahmaputra in Tinsukia district. The 9.15 km bridge is going to be the country's longest bridge, strategically linking to eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh.
