The President of India and the ministers will soon be bound to deliver their speeches only in Hindi. President Pranab Mukherjee has accepted the recommendation in this regard by the Committee of Parliament on Official Languages. It will be applicable to the dignitaries if they can read and speak the language.

The Economic Times reported that the President’s notification has been sent to all ministries, states and the Prime Minister’s Office for compliance.

President Mukherjee has also accepted the recommendation to include usage of Hindi on Air India tickets and having Hindi magazines and newspapers on board for airline passengers. As per the President’s orders, all government and semi-government organisations will need to mention products’ names in Hindi.

In both these cases, the committee’s original recommendations were meant for a wider target group. The committee had asked to enforce usage of Hindi on tickets of all Indian carriers. However, as per the president’s order, the civil aviation ministry has been asked to restrict this only to the state-owned airline.

Similarly, regarding companies, the committee’s original recommendation was to include mandatory use of Hindi for correspondence in public shareholding companies and all private companies to provide product information in Hindi and product name in Devnagri.
