A pani-puri seller in Ahmedabad has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for adding toilet cleaner in the tamarind water used in the fast food.

The verdict has come six years after a case was registered against vendor Chetan Nanji Marvadi in 2009 by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in a special court for adulteration, reports India Today.

The municipal corporation had been receiving multiple complaints by the local residents, who also claimed that the road next to the panipuri stall is damaged due to the leftover water thrown on it.

Responding to the complaints, the food samples were sent  to the food testing laboratory in the state. The report confirmed the presence of oxalic acid which is used in toilet cleaners. Subsequently, a case was filed by AMC against the vendor in the local adulteration court.

However, in his defence, the accused said that there is no strong evidence against him so he should be released.
