A couple in Kashipur was allegedly thrashed by a group of men, in an incident of moral policing in Uttarakhand that echoes certain instances of the 'Anti Romeo Squad' in Uttar Pradesh.

The couple was allegedly found in a compromising position in a wheat field, when a group of men thrashed them, said a report by Times Now.

Whether the men belonged to any fringe group or were locals is not confirmed but the police were informed about the unfortunate incident, the report adds.

Incidents of moral policing have been in the news lately. After Yogi Adityanath- led BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh, an 'Anti- Romeo' squad was launched to keep a vigil at public places and hauling up those suspected of misbehaving with women.

There have, however, been some complaints of young couples being harassed by cops apart from concerns that the move could spawn moral policing.

The 'Anti Romeo Squad' drew criticism from certain quarters with visuals of policemen targeting young boys and girls going viral on TV and on social media.

It was being dubbed as an attempt at moral policing and widely criticised in some quarters as the modus operandi was being compared with the infamous 'Operation Majnu' in 2005, in which boys at crossings and markets were pulled up, and couples in gardens were thrashed by police.
