A survey conducted by NGO has revealed that Karnataka is the most corrupt state in the country  followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab.

The survey was conducted by Centre of Media Studies(CMS) under which 20 states were listed under different categories.  Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Chhattisgarh were the least corrupt.

The report also said that around one-third of the households experienced corruption in public services at least once during the last one year.

In total, 3,000  persons from urban and rural areas were  part of this survey.

The institute said a telephonic survey was also conducted in January on the impact of demonetisation to assess citizen's perception on the level of corruption in public services with a randomly selected sub-sample in all the 20 states.

It also revealed that more than half of the respondents thought corruption had gone down during the demonetisation period between November 8 to December 31.

"More than half of the respondents felt the level of corruption decreased during that period (November-December last year) while 12% opined that graft had increased in that period 21 per cent felt it had remained the same," the survey said.

In the year 2005, a similar study was conducted in which  nearly 53% of households admitted to have paid bribes.

The Chairman of CMS, N Bhaskara Rao, said, "We have been producing reports on corruption for many years. We wanted the NITI Aayog to take note of this, as they are the policy makers."

Rao said while the level of perception of corruption has gone down, the factors associated with graft has "remained almost unchanged", which is a sad commentary on the country that has completed 70 years of its Independence.
