Power comes at a cost, but the bill comes when you lose it, as in the case of Samajwadi party supremo Mulayam Singh.

Days after his party lost power, Yadav received a pending electricity bill to the tune of Rs 4 lakh from a team of electricity department officials inspecting his residence.

Following an inspection at the 77-year-old leader's residence, the officials found that the permissible limit of 5 kW a day was being busted by as many as eight times. A time period till the end of the month has been given to Yadav, reported ANI.

Speaking to NDTV, an officer said that the inspection drive is being done to keep a check on power theft.

“We are conducting a drive to stop power theft, check overloading and recover dues,” said Ashutosh Varma.

When asked about why the inspection was not done earlier, Varma said, "We did not have 40 kW metres earlier. Now we do."

The configurations have been done to allow him 40 kW - the amount that's being consumed now - but Yadav will have to pay for the larger allotment.

In March, Samawadi party's 5-year term had ended after losing the election to Bharatiya Janata Party.

After taking charge as chief minister, Yogi Adityanath had sent a strong message across by announcing his plans to crackdown on corruption.

Last week, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre entered a pact to provide 24-hour power supply to district headquarters, 20 hours to tehsil headquarters and 18 hours to all villages in the state.

The 'Power for All' pact was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power Piyush Goyal at 5 Kalidas Marg, the official residence of the UP Chief Minister.

While stressing that his government has 'fulfilled its promise, Adityanath said the goal is to ensure 24-hour power to all by November 2018, even as Goyal held that continuous electricity supply will help the state in industrialisation and job creation.
