A cave-in formed on a Chennai road on Sunday afternoon has pulled down vehicles causing panic and surprise among commuters.

The Hindu reported that a bus and a car were pulled down due to the cave-in but no one was injured. The bus had stopped at a bus stop when it began to sink as if the air has been let out of the tyres. All the 35 passengers were asked to get down immediately. The fire force was brought in to pull out the bus and the car and the traffic was soon diverted to other routes.

Pictures of the cave-in with a car and a bus being pulled down by it have been doing rounds on social media. The first impression it may create is that of an earthquake.

However, according to the report, the cave-in was formed due to the tunnel boring work for the Chennai Metro rail. The incident occurred at Anna Salai near the Thousand Lights.

According to The Hindu, The Chennai Metro Rail officials said the road caved-in when they were carrying out cut head intervention, a process done as part of tunnel boring work. Two tunnel boring machines have been boring in this stretch for several months now. A few weeks ago, the tunneling caused a foam leakage very close to the site where the cave-in happened today.

The police are cordoning off the area. Cracks have appeared on the pavement on the stretch, the report adds.

According to The Financial Express, there were similar incidents in the past as well. On March 30, a road in same area caved in throwing several vehicles out of gear and the Police had then said that it happened due to the metro construction work taking place in the nearby areas, the newspaper said. According to the report, carters were formed due to metro work in the city in December 2016 and June 2015.
