At every Games, great athletes get to show us why they are so highly rated, like US sprinter and long jumper Carl Lewis did over 1984-96. There have been surprises too, like Kenyan Noah Ngeny who beat favourite Hicham el Gerrouj of Morocco in the 1500 m at Sydney. Athens too is sure to have a few events to keep you on the edge of your seat. But to pull off those surprises, those dark horses will first have to get past these supremely gifted talents who will be making Athens 2004 a spectacle of excellence, says Norris Pritam.
