“The US hasn’t allowed a second 9/11, Indonesia hasn’t allowed another Bali.”—Army chief Gen Deepak Kapoor rues India’s laxness in response to terror, and says we “can’t afford a repeat of 26/11”

Don’t Want The Force

Who wants the CISF at election time? Not Kerala chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan. “Those central forces will remain confined to the barracks,” he said, referring to their deployment for the assembly byelection in Kannur. The CEC had sent in additional forces to ensure free and fair polls in the wake of complaints of massive fake enrolments in the voter list. The Congress-led Opposition saw the CM’s comment as a signal to poll-riggers to have a free run while the state keeps guard over the CISF. If it’s the ruling Left Front who wins, be prepared for a spate of petitions challenging the verdict.

It seems Jairam Ramesh doesn’t want to lose anything in translation. At a recent high-level international meet on climate change in Delhi, Jairam caused a flutter when he declared to the audience that he wasn’t happy with the Indian-arranged interpreter’s translation of Chinese climate change head Xie Zhenhua’s speech. And when some in the audience agreed with Jairam, he went on to ask Xie’s personal interpreter, who was travelling with the visiting dignitary, to come up and deliver the speech again in English. Visibly flummoxed, she did and left Jairam impressed with new facts that were lost in the earlier translation. As Copenhagen draws closer, the government is clearly watching every word that comes out from China, which has emerged as India’s bedfellow on climate change.

It may sound weird, but even as bad blood flooded the BJP banks in Karnataka, the state’s top politicians were busy propitiating the serpent god. It all began with chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa seeking an appointment with the lord of the serpents at the Kukke Subramanya temple near Mangalore immediately after the crisis broke. The very next day, the elder of the rival Reddy brothers, Karunakar, was seen doing the needful after a serpent “entered” his official residence—not particularly a good omen. Even as the two rivals were invoking counter-strategies to charm the serpent lord, it was reported that H.D. Deve Gowda and his son Kumaraswamy too were getting rid of a ‘serpent curse’. A huge ‘homa’ (fire ritual) was on, with nearly a hundred priests engaged near Chennai. Still, while these three men were securing their futures, Congressmen, complacent as ever, were still curled up in their burrows. So are the snake gods mad, is this all an allegory for the current political state of being in Bengaluru? Only the lord can answer that one.

White Elephants

How well did Mayawati fare in the recently concluded assembly polls in Maharashtra? Well, the BSP contested in 281 seats and in 252 of them its candidates lost their deposit. Clearly, the rabbit refused to come out of the hat.
