“Silence is my only weapon now.” —Karnataka Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran refuses to comment on the land-grabbing and other allegations against him. The judge’s elevation to the Supreme Court is under a cloud and investigations are on.

The Time Of Indifference

The recent parliamentary party meeting of the BJP had a one-point agenda: Vasundhararaje’s expulsion as leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan assembly. Strange as it may seem, the party’s poor performance in Maharashtra was not even discussed. Neither was the strategic error of cutting ties with Om Prakash Chautala which led to the blackout in Haryana. It was obvious that neither the party president Rajnath Singh nor the other senior worthies were in the mood for any chintan baithaks. The sorry state of affairs led one leader to remark that “the party with a difference has become the party that’s indifferent”.

The man who famously asked “Who is Ram?” sending the country into a tizzy has some answering to do now. An insurance scheme bearing Tamil Nadu CM M. Karunanidhi’s name has come out with an ad portraying him as a power that could stop Yama (the god of death). Enough cause for rival AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha to get all het up, questioning the rational credentials of the man who till yesterday was the state’s agnostic No. 1. The ad slogans not only praise Karunanidhi but also shows him throwing a “rope of love” around the scheme’s beneficiaries stopping Yama in his tracks. Now Jayalalitha wants to know how Karunanidhi will stop Yama. “Why is he then projecting the image of an atheist...even condemning DMK cadre who sport tilak on their foreheads?” she asks. She also brought up the issue of the CM sporting a yellow shawl, alleging it was on an astrologer’s advice. We wait with bated breath for MK’s return volley.

Step Up, Step Down

After the drubbing in the Maharashtra polls, Shiv Sena underboss Uddhav Thackeray did consider putting on one of those tried-and-tested resignation dramas that his father Bal Thackeray had perfected. The old man himself was busy dictating a scathing Saamna editorial directed against the the Marathi manoos’s “ungrateful heart” for “deserting” him. So, even as Thackeray Sr was spluttering away, Uddhav’s thoughts had started to unravel. After all, didn’t hordes of shocked Sainiks rush to ‘Matoshree’ every time Balasaheb invoked the “resignation” mantra, imploring him to stay on. For a brief while, Uddhav harboured visions of the Marathi manoos doing a similar number for him. Thankfully, his inner coterie dissuaded him, saying it was too risky and that the resignation farce could backfire. Uddhav later decided to try the other tack, declaring  “there was no question of my resigning ever”.

In Kerala, not even exams can bypass the political drama. Plus-two students appearing for a mid-term English paper were asked to write a ‘letter to the editor’ criticising the prominent coverage given to the death of Mercy Ravi, wife of Union overseas affairs minister and senior Congressman Vayalar Ravi.

The only politician true to his word has been Digvijay singh who has not accepted any post since 2003 after he lost election in MP. I simply fail to understand why intelligent and good intentioned person like him fail to deliver. May be he was CM when finance of MP were poorest (1993-2003) and he did bring the economy of state on track and did finest implementation of Panchayati raj in entire cow belt
